Types of Brain Injuries
There are two types of brain injuries: those caused by trauma and those caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain. Traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs, are the result of a forceful blow to the head that causes bruising or bleeding in the brain. Because brain cells are not regenerative like other types of cells, all brain injuries – even those considered “mild” – should be taken seriously and require prompt medical attention. Concussions are the most common type of TBI.
Common causes of traumatic brain injuries include:
- Auto accidents
- Sports-related injuries
- Assaults
- Workplace accidents
Non-traumatic brain injuries are the result of other causes besides a blow to the head. The brain can suffer an injury when its supply of oxygen is significantly reduced (hypoxia) or completely cut off (anoxia). When the brain does not have enough oxygen, it cannot carry out essential functions and brain cells will begin to die after about 4 or 5 minutes, causing irreversible brain damage. Infections such as encephalitis can also cause damage to brain cells.
Common causes of non-traumatic brain injuries include:
- Medical errors
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Viral infections
